IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT
MARIA CARINHAS, TUNNEL HANGER, D05 TORONTO CENTRAL
How long have you been with Canadian Linen?
23 years! I started at the Toronto Atomic branch and moved to Toronto Central eight years ago. But I’ve always been in the same department.
What do you enjoy the most about your job?
I love everything! I love my job, the company, and I like to work fast! My coworkers are the best – it’s just like a family. Also, I’m thankful I get to work with my sister, Liliana Marques, who has been with Canadian Linen for 17 years.
How would your coworkers describe you?
We’re all friends. We all work so well together, and we’re always trying to do our best. My sister is such a big help – she always has everything ready to go for us. [Note: Maria is modest. Liliana says she is known as “Superwoman.”]
How many pieces on average do you process each day?
I can usually do 3,500 myself! I’m able to process almost double the amount of garments, around 1,000 pieces, because my sister prepares so well for us every morning.
Since we’re in the business of laundering, do you iron your own clothes?
Oh yes, I love it!
When you’re not at work, what are your favourite hobbies?
I enjoy cooking for my family. My favorite is a fish dish. I love spending time with my husband and son who is a nurse.
